Just in case you missed Part I – here it is.
6} Teach all of my children how to read.
I have one more child to go. One. More.
There was a time when the thought of teaching one single person how to read made me want to run and hide. Oh, wait. That was just last week.
::snort out loud::
Joking. Only joking. #kindof
Honestly, I’m more proud of teaching my children to read than I am about so many other things. This is a big one in my book.
7} Try in-door rock-climbing.
A year ago this would have never even been on my radar, but I’ve been feeling a little more crazy lately.
Now that I think of it, it’s not really that crazy. I mean . . . . it IS in-door rock-climbing monitored by professionals. It’s not like I’m repelling off the side of a mountain solo. Right? #snort
8} Re-learn to play the flute.
This is one of my big regrets. If I could go back to my fifteen year old self and whack myself over the head a few times, I totally would. I ain’t braggin’ or nothin’ . . . {name that movie}, but I was actually fairly decent. I believe I could have gone far if I hadn’t quit.
I just up and quit. Just like that.
My poor mother. She probably wanted to stick her head through a wall with all of my genius decision making back then.
Right now, my flute is patiently sitting under the bed in my bedroom. It needs a really good cleaning and some of the pads probably need to be replaced, but other than that I think it should be in excellent condition.
I just need to set the money aside and stop making excuses.
9} Take ballroom dancing lessons.
My man and I took a 30-minute lesson a few years ago on one of our anniversaries. It was so much fun!
Dancing with your man . . . . hmmmmm. I highly recommend it.
I would love to take a series of lessons. I just need to talk him into it.
10} Take a wine appreciation class.
Honestly . . . . I’m not picky when it comes to wine. My man buys the cheapest wine to keep our wine rack stocked. I wouldn’t know the difference between good wine and great wine, but I’m a willing learner.
UPDATE on 5} Bake a moist, yellow cake from scratch: I gave it a try a couple of weeks ago and . . . . bombed. It was so dry. So, so soooo dry. I’m not giving up, though.

I would love to do every single one of those things with you! okay, maybe not the teach to read thing – My daughter pretty much taught herself. My son is 4 1/2 and I know I should be doing it with him now, but it makes me want to run and hide. So, let’s run and hide together, okay?
I read everything you write – and love it all.

I used to play the flute too!!! I was either first or second chair up to 10th grade band. I think that might have been my last year in band – either 10th or 11th. I was in a bunch of AP classes starting junior year so I decided to give up band. Sad day too. I love the flute! Mine is in the closet of my bedroom at my parents house. Maybe someday!
And go you on the indoor rock climbing! I did it once last year when we visited Matt’s parents in CA. Scary and awesome. Afterwards, you feel so great though!!

I feel the same way about #6. It IS a big deal!
My son rock climbs indoors and loves it. It’s good to have a partner who can belay for you.
The guitar – gave it up and regret it.
Keep trying on the moist cake thing. I know you’ll get it. I would look up Alton Brown for this one.

First chair trumpet player right here sister.
I quit too and same as you, I was actually good without even trying real hard. In fact I got in trouble once for leaving my trumpet in the instrument closet every day ::busted:: I never practiced…obviously I had zero interest in what I was doing no matter how good I was at it. I moved on to more refined, dignified, cultured areas of interest…like cheerleading. I was genius like that.
Rock climbing walls…I’m not afraid of the heights aspect of them…I’m more terrified of the ridiculous harnesses they strap on you and the severe wedgy they inflict. I’ve seen girls that look really cute in those harnesses…all sporty and mountain climby. I’m afraid that would not be the case with me. Kinda like being pregnant…I didn’t wear it well.

I wish you would have told me about the rock climbing! There’s a gym close by that I used to go to a lot! It’s a blast…do it!

Hmmm…surprisingly, this part of the list is one that is mostly outside my realm of wishing. My kids are 18 & 16 and I had a hand in teaching them to read, I think. It was a long time ago.
Indoor rock climbing? Not so much. Mostly for the reasons that Talysa so eloquently shared. ::snort::
I can’t relearn the flute since I never learned it in the first place. I can play a mean kazoo, though.
Ballroom dancing. This one would probably be fun. With my hubby anyway. Otherwise, not so much.
Wine appreciation won’t be happening anytime in my lifetime. I pretty much can’t stand wine. It all has to do with a very stupid night many, many years ago involving 3 bottles of very cheap wine, a lame board game, and my boyfriend’s cousin. Let’s just say it wasn’t pretty.

We cheated on the Ballroom dancing and bought a DVD. That way, if we ever live close enough to a city again and take real lessons, we’ll have some practice.
Fun stuff, and the ice is handy when I stomp on Ann’s feet!

I hear you on the reading…I am always so proud when one of my kids starts to read.
All four of mine are now independent readers, and I’m just SO happy.

Lol, I could have written every word of #8, except that I played clarinet and it’s hiding under the guest bed. I took it out last year to show the kids when we were reading Story of the Orchestra, but I couldn’t play it anymore because I’ve totally lost my embouchure. We all laughed so hard as air spilled out the sides of my mouth.

What yellow cake recipe did you use? Did you see the one by Bakerella? (Not that I have every used any of her recipes, but with a name like that, surely she knows what she is doing, right?) Or there is this one from allrecipes: http://allrecipes.com/recipe/davids-yellow-cake/detail.aspx
You should totally pick up the flute again. Your chin will hurt at first, but stick with it for a couple of weeks and it’ll get much easier. Hey, you can do a flute/piano duet with your girl! I would recommend working through this technique book to brush up on your mad skillz: http://www.amazon.com/Rubank-Advanced-Method-Educational-Library/dp/1423444353
Thinking about any kind of rock climbing makes me tired. But I think I would like to try indoor so long as there is a safety harness and no audience to laugh at my ridiculousness!
I loved that lightbulb moment when reading made sense to my boys. And I loved loved loved rewarding them with their own wallet and library card! Happy happy joy joy!!!

i didn’t use her exact recipe, but i did her trick of making a simple syrup, poking the cake with a straw and then spraying the syrup onto the cake layers. i also did her tip of wrapping each layer in plastic wrap as soon as you take them out of the pans. i’m thinking i just baked them too long.

I think you stole my list! Except all my kids read (My #1 fear about starting to homeschool 15 years ago) and I can bake a moist yellow cake from scratch. It’s a Hot Milk Cake and I’ll try and find the recipe online when I get back from taking child #6 to basketball (there is a reason numbers 1-5 didn’t get to start sports until high school…)

I love it. I will have to make myself a list and get at it. Inspiring Ruthanne.
Come by for my first guest post in a new series I’m doing called Motivate Me Monday. I’d LOVE if you would share your running/fitness/weightloss journey with my readers. Let me know. K?

So far I’ve got three out of seven reading. The fourth is well on his way.
There are days when I’m sure I’m going to pull my hair out or it’s all going to go grey overnight.
But, we have survived. So far.

Yay for teaching your children to read… I know what you mean about this being perhaps the biggest accomplishment. I truly feel that I have given my children such a gift by being their teacher and instilling a love of reading in each of them. I love your whole list…. I’m new to your blog and I’m enjoying poking around here. It’s beautiful!
