{Home Ec} Project #1 ~ Cloth Napkins

I finished the first Home Ec project this morning. Yo!

Go, Ruthanne. Go, Ruthanne. Go. Go. Go. Go.

I ended up with 18 napkins. I didn’t follow directions exactly. It’s a trait of mine. ;-) I decided to make both types of napkins double-sided. I just loved the look of the double-sided.

Yesterday, was my first time to ever use the zigzag stitch. How fun is that stitch?!

If we use them for everyday napkins, then we’ll go through all of them in a day. That kinda depresses me. Maybe we’ll save them for when guests come over and use the ones I made two years ago everyday. Even though they’re beyond ugly.

They’re just plain sad. Sad, sad, sad. Apparently, I was too lazy to look for coordinating thread and I knew zilch about thread tension.

Are you taking the Home Ec class? If so, what project are you working on?

Ruthanne, they are beautiful!! I can hardly sew a straight line. I gave my sewing machine to my mother-in-law, who would put it to more use that I would.

    Hey Classmate!
I ADORE your napkins! I can’t believe how many you made. I started my single-sided ones last night and they took WAY longer than I anticipated. I know, it’s hard to imagine going through all of them in one day, but I guess that’s 18 less paper napkins in the garbage, right? :) Can’t wait to see more of your projects! -e

I think the single-sided ones would take longer. It seems like more work.

    Thanks for stopping by, Emily!

I was SO tempted to take this class, but I had a feeling I would start the first projects and then just get frustrated and give up. You make it look so easy! I shall live through you and your sewing genius.

Well, I won’t be going the same pace as the projects are listed. No way! If I get one completed a week, I’ll be a happy girl. If I finish two, I’ll be ecstatic and reward myself with Starbucks.

Love your fabric selection, much cuter than my 1.50/yd find at WM. I’m hoping people will look past the questionable coordination and think “vintage?”.

Hey, I was impressed by your sad cloth napkins! It’s the first time I had used cloth napkins in like FOREVER.

I’m hoping to make mine today.

those are adorable! Love them! We use cloth napkins as well (not cute, though, I have to say), and we have a bunch of napkin rings. When we’re done with them after a meal, if they’re not dirty, we’ll each have a ring and keep them for the next meal. Just a thought :)

I’m so happy to have found your blog. I’m not currently doing anything with my own sewing machine but am thinking of making some pillows this fall when dear son goes back to school.

I also homeschooled one of my daughters due to her struggle with dyslexia. We didn’t have a great school room like you do but it worked out fine! lol

I also am in love with my Nikon…

Going, along with what Beth said above: When I was younger my family used cloth napkins for a little while. There were 7 of us in our family and we each had our own napkin holder a friend had made for us. They were all a different animal so we could put our napkin in it after each meal to use for the next, unless it got really dirty.

We have been using cloth napkins in our household for years now and I must say that we reuse them over and over again before I wash them (like 3-4 days). I don’t have children but my husband sure can dirty up a cloth napkin. Love your fabric selection!
