It’s called avoidance. Do you do it?

~A~ Since the beginning of summer, the children and I have been doing minimal school ~ math, reading, history, and Bible. Because we haven’t been working on our full school load, I didn’t feel like venturing up to the schoolroom. We’ve just been spreading out downstairs at the table. I’ve been sending one of the children up to get something when we need it . . . . and having them put stuff away when we’re done with it.

~B~ A local daycare closed its doors last month and they are selling off everything inside. I was able to snag some fabulous deals on things I’ve been wanting for our schoolroom, but just couldn’t stomach the price tag. We are going to pick everything up this afternoon. I’m so excited! I’ll share photos with y’all after I get everything settled.

How do these two things fit together? Excellent question.

I decided this morning I probably needed to straighten up a bit upstairs in preparation for our “new-to-us” stuff. Ya know. Nothing major. We haven’t been doing school up there for two months, so it shouldn’t be that bad, right?

Wrong. Ooooh, so very wrong.

I wanted to curl into a ball and weep.

Oh, wait. I did do that. I believe some snot was involved somewhere. After I could catch my breath, I knew I was faced with two decisions ~ tackle the mess and get it over with or avoid it.

I chose option two.

I baked four dozen cinnamon rolls.

And then, I baked five loaves of bread.

I thought maybe I could head upstairs at that point, but I started shaking uncontrollably and decided against it.

I packaged up all the orders to be mailed out this afternoon. Sixteen packages in all, two of which are from giveaways.

Oh, by the way, have you seen the newest edition to the shop? I’ll be adding a new slip cover each day this week. :-)

Then, I twiddled my thumbs.

“Should I head upstairs now?” I asked myself.

Hyperventilation occurred.

I decided it was time to start planning our trip to NYC. Yes, that was much better. No shaking or hyperventilating or weeping.

Just about that time, I heard someone calling my name. It was the cinnamon rolls. I ate one. Or two.

{Note: I did not eat all of the ones that are missing from this picture. I had lots of little helpers. I promise.}

Now, what to do . . . . .

I have a similar reaction about this time every year as well. How does the schoolroom get so messy when “nobody” is using it?? LOL!

And those cinnamon rolls….oh my…they look like Pioneer Woman’s version? I love those. However, if yours are some new recipe then I must try them! Any chance you’d share the recipe?

    1. May I have your cinnamon roll recipe? I don’t like mine.

    2. We’ve been doing school in the living room because it’s cooler in here. And my school room is horrendous. I mean, so horrendous that I would love for mine to look like yours horrendous. I go in there daily and put in as much work as I can before I flee. I honestly don’t know when we’ll have enough order to start a new year of school. Yes, it’s depressing. I’m there with ya!

  6. Oh, sister. I am the Queen of Avoidance! (If only I were as productive in my procrastination as you with the bread and the mailing and the cinnamon rolls. OH, the cinnamon rolls!!!) My worst avoidance habit involves my wallet and a huge, messy stack of receipts. I’m SO BAD at balancing my checkbook!!!

Good luck with your school room. I know you’ll get it whipped into shape in no time!

  7. What to do? MAIL ME SOME CINNAMON ROLLS.

See? Easy answer to your question.

Can’t wait to see the new goodies in your school room as well as your new creations! Did you see the little red fire engine thingy and cycle-go-round thingy in our side yard, by the trampoline? Those were FREE from an old daycare!

I feel for you, darling. This was me a few weeks ago. The air conditioner went out for the school room (it’s above the semi-detached garage, so rest of the house was fine) and it took over 3 weeks to get it replaced. So I never went up there. The kids didn’t seem to care that it was 110 degrees up there, so they spent plenty of time up there (our only tv is up there, plus all their art supplies). I also had a growing mess in the schoolroom closet because I ran out of space earlier this year and just stuffed things in boxes on the floor. Soooo… when the AC was fixed and I finally ventured up there, I had the same reaction — lots of tears. I had to pull an all-nighter to get it into decent shape, but I still have a couple of boxes to sort and a shelf in the closet to organize. The room also has a small attic area that’s also a disaster, but I’m just fine with avoiding that for now. :)

You had me. Then you lost me. Right about the time that picture of cinnamon rolls rolled up in front of my eyes and made my tongue hang out of my mouth. I do not know what you said after that. Good thing they were last.

I would so come and help you organize that room….if you make me some of those rolls….and coffee….AND if you promise to forget that you ever saw me licking the edges of your pan. ;-)
