Workbox System ~ Part IV

Today, I’m going to share Cowgirl Princess’ Workbox basket. The schedule below is from a day earlier this week (her time strip and folders change everyday). She’s my 5th grader and thus my most independent worker.

If you haven’t yet, go ahead and read Part I, Part II and Part III of this series (just so you know what’s going on around here).

Folder 1 ~ Math

030-Edit

I prefer her to do Math right away while her mind is fresh ~ we go over it together later.

033-Edit

Folder 2 ~ Coloring Picture

034-Edit

This will go in her history notebook, along with any maps, writing assignments, etc.

035-Edit

Folder 3 ~ Art

036-Edit

She is working her way through God and the History of Art.

037-Edit

Folder 4 ~ Journal

038-Edit

During her journal time, I require her to write ten sentences in ten minutes.

012-Edit

Folder 5 ~ Vocabulary

041-Edit

Her vocabulary words are part of her Shurley English lesson. I have her work on the vocabulary words independently and then we go over them during our English lesson.

015-Edit

Typing & Piano

Folder 6 ~ God’s World News

043-Edit

She reads as many articles as she wants and we discuss them later.

045-Edit

Folder 7 ~ Reading & Snack

046-Edit

I assign her a book to read for 30 minutes during the schoolday (she has additional quiet reading time in the evening with a book of her choice). I try to find books to complement what we’re learning about in history.

048-Edit

Folder 8 ~ Book Basket Time

049-Edit

Folder 9 ~ Spelling

050-Edit

051-Edit

Folder 10 ~ Shurley English

Folder 11 ~ English from the Roots Up

057-Edit

Folder 12 ~ Writing

058-Edit

She normally has one paper assigned per week.

Other items used to fill her folders:

~Wrap-ups
~Computer game
~Listening time
~File folder activities
~History time-line
~Book basket time with the two younger boys (she reads the books they pick out)
~Spelling City
~Math drills
~Music theory
~A specific book (One that either (a) we don’t have time to read all together or (b) is too difficult for the younger children to understand)

I’ll be back tomorrow with some Q&A.

Workbox System ~ Part III

Thank you so very much to all of you who gave me some comment love the past couple of days. Let me tell ya ~ posting on another site is slightly nerve wracking.

For those of you new to this series on how we’re implementing the Workbox System, here’s Part I and Part II.

I thought I would do this post a little different. I’m going to show you my 2nd
Grader’s actual basket from earlier this week and then list other items I use to fill his folders. You will see several overlapping ideas from Part II.

Folder 1 ~ Handwriting

001-Edit

He is typically assigned one page a day. If he has questions, I answer those for him before he begins and then he works independently.

003-Edit

Folder 2 ~ Coloring Picture

004-Edit

We’ve been studying the process of how the Egyptians made papyrus. When he completes this coloring picture, it will be added to his history notebook.

006-Edit

Folder 3 ~ Snack

007-Edit

Folder 4 ~ Listening Time

008-Edit

This is probably his favorite part of the school day!

I’ve exhausted all the audio books containing CDs at our local library. I’ve had to resort to cassette tapes. Can I get a unanimous groan?!

009-Edit

Folder 5 ~ Copywork

010-Edit

We are memorizing the Ten Commandments, so I have the ones we’ve memorized so far written on my board and he copies them down.

Folder 6 ~ Shurley English

011-Edit

003-Edit

Folder 7 ~ Reading

013-Edit

004-Edit

Folder 8 ~ Math

017-Edit

018-Edit

Folder 9 ~ God’s World Newsletter

019-Edit

022-Edit

Folder 10 ~ Craft Project

Some of the lessons in Shurley English call for craft projects to reinforce a certain concept or just for fun.

007-Edit

Folder 11 ~ Book Basket Time

009-Edit

Folder 12 ~ Wrap-ups

028-Edit

He loves these and they’re perfect for him to work on independently.

010-Edit

Other things used to fill his folders:

~Dictation
~Flash cards
~A specific book (one from the book basket)
~Computer game
~File folder activities (These cover all kinds of skills)
~Puzzles
~Maps
~A book for him to read to his 3 year old brother (Good for both of them!)

The order of his folders change daily and I try to mix up the items within the folders ~ that way things always feel fresh and new.
